Shrewsbury & Telfordd Areas Senior Merit Qualifying Preview

It’s the turn of the Shrewsbury and Telford areas to take 12 spaces each for the finals day of the Shropshire Senior Merit. There are 36 bowlers in both areas looking to take one of those final day tickets. Callum Wraight will be favourite to add a fourth Merit crown as he tries to qualify at Bicton. Team mate Glyn Herbert is also there, being runner-up in 1990, and Russell Pugh who impressed in the Premier League last season. Mark Shore reached the Quarter Finals last season, and his Hanwood team mate Dan Williams will be looking to make his mark on this competition for the first time. At Monkmoor and twice winner Rich Goddard takes part, along with other former winners Kiah Roberts and Derek Wright. Adie Rowe and Gary Neal are two others who will be expected to go close but it is a tough field. The other Shrewsbury venue, Telepost, has former runner-up Wayne Phillips and Will Tarrell take part, along with Junior Merit winner Ash Wellings and runner-up Craig Wilson. The experienced Paul Williams and Andy Duckett are looking to finally make their mark in this competition, although Paul has reached the Semi Finals before.

Over in Telford, and Staffordshire Merit winner Dan Taylor starts his quest to make it a double at Madeley Cricket Club. Former Semi Finalist Tony Rhodes is also there, along with team mate Pete Grimston. Young guns Kane Beaman, Michael Cooper, Josh Cotton, Aaron King and Akeel Khan are all there too. At Sinclair, Jamie King and Scott Harries won the Premier League Doubles there just last month, while Josh Bradburn, Tom Roden and Liam Stevens are all former Premier League Merit winners and love the green. Ian Gaut comes off winning the Mid Shropshire Over 60s Merit just today, while Stuart Rutter will be looking to make an impact on this competition. The final venue is Trench, and last year’s finalists Dave Lloyd and Pete Farmer could meet again as both take part, along with two time winner Spencer Clarke. Junior Merit winner Harry Church is there, along with other former Juniors Rob Fuller, Phil Jones, Matt Rhodes and Ayden Smith. Steve Broome will also be full of confidence after breaking into the Senior County side recently.
