Shrewsbury & Telford Areas Merit Qualifiers Report

The field of 32 is now known for the 2023 Shropshire Senior Merit. Please see below for report and scores from each green.

Bicton

Three time winner Callum Wraight will start as favourite after qualifying, beating Anthony Gray 17 and Doug Edwards 7, with Doug beating Rich Proudlove first game 10. Mark Shore qualified for a second year running, defeating Chris Jones 20, after Chris had beat Glyn Herbert 19 in the prelims. Jesse James got through after beating Russell Pugh 15, and Nick Davies also did by getting past Liam Page 10.

Monkmoor

Two former winners Rich Goddard and Kiah Roberts got through at Monkmoor. Kiah Roberts beat Mark Thomas 13 and Dave Redge 5, while Rich Goddard defeated Gary Neal 19. Will Tyler qualified by beating Simon Lane 18, while Adie Rowe got past former winner Derek Wright 12 and Harry Ryder 18, Harry having beaten Dan Jones 10 first game.

Telepost

2021 runner-up Will Tarrell qualified at Telepost after beating Dave Nicholls 20 in the qualifiers, Dave having got past Julian Cooke 11 first game. Former Junior Merit winner Ash Wellings got through by beating Adam Jones 14, while former Junior Merit runner-up Craig Wilson beat Andy Judson 17 to get through. The other qualifier was former semi-finalist Paul Williams who beat Andy Duckett 20 and Pete Nicholls 8.

Madeley CC

Two Rhodes’ got through at Madeley CC as brothers Simon and Tony qualified. Simon beat team mate Jamie Taylor 3 to get through, while Tony beat his own team mate Pete Grimston 16, after Pete beat Kane Beaman 15 first game. Michael Cooper qualified for his first finals after beating Aaron King 17, while Steve Roberts beat team mate Dan Taylor 16 and Chris Worthington 15, Chris having got past Josh Cotton 20 first game.

Sinclair

Jamie King and Scott Harries produced the form that got them the Premier League doubles as they both qualified at Sinclair. Jamie beat Liam Stevens 16 and then Stuart Rutter 11, while Scott got past Tom Roden 9. Ian Gaut continued his great weekend by qualifying after beating John Clarke 13, while Josh Bradburn was the other qualifier after getting past Dave Evans 18, Dave having beaten Craig Baugh 20 in the prelims.

Pete Farmer managed to reverse the score in the final last season as he beat holder Dave Lloyd 16 to qualify. Pete beat Rob Fuller 9 and Dave got past Tom Killen 8 in their first games. Harry Church got through to his first finals after beating Phil Jones 16 and Martin Williams 11, while two time winner Spencer Clarke got through after getting past Steve Broome 18. Phil King was the other qualifier, beating Ayden Smith 19.
