Hadnall shocked holders Newport in the KGJ Insurance Shropshire Cup 1st round as they won by 10 chalks on Bridgewater. Alan Davidson winning from way down and John Breeze (best winner 3) showed their class but we battled really well and going in to the back all square was great for us. Andy Cooke and Steve Dance both tremendous late in their games to see us home. Great friendly atmosphere between the teams and wish Newport all the best for the rest of the season.” Tim himself was best winner 12. The closest game of the night was at Wem USC where Castlefields beat Hadley USC by 6 chalks. Victorious captain Graham Wall says “as the result suggests, it was a close tough game, considering we had 9 winners and only won by 6 chalks shows how close all games were.” Their best winner was Rhys Marshall 11, with Dave Price’s 8 card best for the Telford side. Former winners Prince of Wales Hotel beat last year’s runners up Wrockwardine Wood by 19 on Adderley. Skipper Danny Wornell said “it was a good game on a good green, Nicki Hotchkiss and Ian Payne played well to make sure we got the win. Overall a good team performance against another good team.” Nicki and Hayden Lewis were best winners 8, with Holly Bishton best for the Wrockites 5.

Shifnal caused a shock as the Division Two side beat Division One side St Georges on Edgmond by 56. It was all the more remarkable as “we turned up with 10 players unfortunately as didn’t realise it was 12, so part way through the draw I had to quickly find 2 players, this was soon done so onto the game.” said captain Chris Newbrook.” Out went the first 4 with Shifnal on odd number jacks. Aa solid start by our front 4 saw us have 4 winners and a good lead in chalks due to 2 single figure wins. In the middle 4 and a repeat performance, 4 winners so effectively game over as back 4 just needed to pick up as many chalks as possible. This was done with 1 more winner so we won 9-3 and by 56 chalks, a great result from the team.” Best winner for them was Graham Turner against his former team 4, while Barry Gilder was best for the Dragons 3. There was no such issues for Sir John Bayley against their Division Two opponents Bridgnorth, winning by 70 on the Bowring. Garry Owen was best winner 4 for them, and Pauline Wilson’s 13 win was best for Bridgnorth. The all Mid Shropshire clash between Horsehay and Trench ended with a 20 shot win for Horsehay at Shifnal. Alan Ludlow-Rhodes was best winner for Horsehay 9, and Paul Osbourne 11 for Trench. Adderley beat Battlefield by 62 at Trench with Carol Goodwin their best winner 3, and Colin Hayes’ 10 win best for their Shrewsbury opponents.

The draw for the next round will take place on Thursday 19th May.
