The final 5 ties were completed on Wednesday for the 1st round of the KGJ Shropshire Cup. There was a tie at the Bowring where St Georges and Sir John Bayley met, St Georges going through on best winner. Captain Richard Griggs commented “I said this would be an exciting fixture and so it proved to be. What drama! Our front four got us off to the perfect start, but we knew they had quality, and the match was far from over. SJB gave as good as they got and put themselves right back in the mix. But what has been the theme throughout our club this season, we supported each other, and were able to win the game by the tightest of margins.” Best winners for St Georges were Matt Farmer and Nige Evans 9, with S Clarke best for the Bayley 10. There were two upsets with Division Two teams upsetting their Division One counterparts. Bridgnorth beat Allscott by 7 at the Bayley, with spokesman Bill Meredith saying “a good win from Jill Richard 21-11 helped us be 12 shots down with the last 2 on. Wins by Gary Fuller 17, and then an impressive 21-6 win by Claude Chetter (best winner) meant we won by 7.” Best winner for Allscott was Fiona Waland 10. Meole Brace defeated Battlefield by 12 to cause an upset, best winners being Ian Riddell and Andrew Corfield 9. Battlefield’s best was Ian Foster 10. Bridgewater beat Old Shrewsbury by 55 at Donnington Wood with Mark Harris best winner 7 and Richard Jones best for Old Shrewsbury 9. Bowring defeated Trench by 53 as Nick Marshall was best winner 7, Trench’s best being Siobhan Harding 10.
