The 2022 KGJ Insurance Shropshire Cup Final takes place tonight at Old Shrewsbury between two Shrewsbury rivals in Castlefields and Prince of Wales Hotel. Both teams have won this competition before, the Prince in 2016 and Castlefields in 2017. The Prince have had quite a tough route to the final, their biggest win only being by 33 in the Preliminary round against Sinclair, defeating three other Mid Shropshire sides in holders Wrockwardine Wood, Horsehay and Sir John Bayley by just 5 in the Semi Finals. The Fields have had an easier run, their closest game being against Hadley USC in the 1st round, winning by just 6. They beat Greenfields in the prelims, then Hadnall and Shifnal comfortably.
Castlefields are 13 points ahead of the Prince at the top of the Tanners League so it promises to be a close contest. Both players have plenty of experience to call upon. The Prince have Ade Jennings, Danny Wornell and Tony Hotchkiss who have played over 100 games in the Premier League, while Mick Jones at number 12 has experience of bringing home a final. The Fields have stalwarts Barry Keep, Alan Peach, Kevin Walker and Steve Duckett in their side.
Prince captain Danny Wornell says “firstly I’d like to congratulate Castlefields for getting to the final as they are a fantastic club with great history. I know they are missing a couple of players but they have bought in some great replacements. I think it’s going to be a tight game and could come down to 1 bad card for either team which could make the difference. I know they will have a lot of support and be louder than us so we just need to concentrate and hopefully let our bowls do the talking. It is going to be to tight to call so let’s hope its a good final played in the right spirit.” Fields skipper Graham Wall is “looking forward to the final against another Shrewsbury based club, our players know each other very well and will be all about who settles on the night. We’ve had to make 3 changes but every confidence in the lads stepping in to take their chance.”
