KGJ Insurance Shropshire Cup 1st Round Preview

There are 7 ties in the 1st round draw of the KGJ Insurance Shropshire Cup. Holders Newport play Hadnall on Bridgewater Big Green as they look to retain the trophy. The team they beat in that final, Wrockwardine Wood, look to go one better but have a tough game against former winners Prince of Wales Hotel on Adderley. The Prince have had the very sad news of one of their members Graeme Wornell recently passing, giving them extra motivation this season, especially as his son Danny is captain of the cup team. He says “we will try our best to win against a good side which will be hard to beat. Again we will do our best to win for dad.” St Georges reached the final in 2019 and play a team from the division below in Shifnal at Edgmond. Shifnal skipper Chris Newbrook thinks “we are up against it tomorrow night, but we have a few new good players acquired over the close season, so I’m hoping we can put up a good show and give them a good game. The loss of Joe Killen to Newport is a big blow to us, but I wish him well for the future.” There is another all Mid Shropshire clash as Horsehay play Trench in what could be a close game on Shifnal, while Mid Shropshire Division Two side Bridgnorth will look to cause a big upset against Sir John Bayley on Bowring. Adderley have started the Market Drayton League well and will be expected to defeat Tanners League side Battlefield at Trench. Castlefields won this competition in 2017, and had their toughest game that season against Hadley USC in the semi final when they won by just 4. They meet again, this time in the 1st round, on Wem USC. Hadley skipper Connor Rew says “we are all looking forward to playing against a strong side in Castlefields. With a few players making the step up into the team and looking to prove themselves, it should make for a great game.” Weston Rhyn receive a bye into the Quarter Finals.
