Another new name will be engraved on the John Bowers Cup following Wrockwardine Wood’s Scott Moseley got the better of Adie Rowe of Castlefields, 21-14 in the final of the late Spring Bank Holiday, County Handicap competition staged on the two superbly presented greens of Old Shrewsbury BC.
Competitions Secretary, Mike Potter welcomed everyone to Old Shrewsbury BC and after enlisting the help of Louise Cotton & Phil King proceeded to make the draw that would see the 61 entries battle it out on the two greens of the Shrewsbury club and where the quarter-finalists contested the final stages on the green near the river Severn.
Some notable highlights from earlier rounds.
A little over 12 hours after winning the Newport Open, Premier Lge and county team regular, Jamie King just survived a severe test that would earn budding young gun, Jarrett Cotterill(Newport) the Best Novice of the Day Award as Jamie just scraped through to the next round 21-20.
Ben Hinton, after sharing the first half dozen ends to tie 3-3 completed the most unlikely run-out 21-3 against probably the unluckiest player of the day, Kiah Roberts.
Highlights from the Quarter Finals
Scott Moseley had to fight back from 2-9 and 8-14 down against Chris Jones and eventually levelled the game 17-17 before ending Chris’s hopes by finishing the game 21-18.
An even start between Dave Turner and two time previous winner, Keith Wall that saw the scores go from 6-6, 9-9 and 13-13. Keith then mounted an attack that stalled at 17-14 which allowed Dave to take the last 5 ends and run out a 21-17 winner.
Adie Rowe turned a 6-3 advantage over Rob Jones and then went on to 13-6 and 19-7 before finishing off 21-8.
Ade Jennings and Ash Wellings. Unfortunately, I’ve mislaid the score card of this game, however, I do know it was a much closer encounter than the scores suggest with both playing some excellent close bowls that saw Ade eventually win through 21-10.
Highlights from Semi-Finals
A very tight game between Scott Moseley and Ade Jennings ensued with both players giving their all that saw the scores go 5-5, 10-10, 14-14 and 19-19. With the game looking like neither should lose, luck played its part as Scott made his way into the final just edging it 21-19.
Meanwhile, Adie Rowe turned his tied game against Dave Turner from 3-3 in to a strong 15-4 lead and on to 19-8 and just as he made double figures, Dave’s run in the competition was ended with Adie finishing the game 21-10.
The Final
Enjoying the early evening sunshine, a reasonably sized crowd of 40+ spectators stayed to watch the final that saw Scott Moseley and Adie Rowe test each other on various marks seeing the scores level at 5-5(6 ends), 8-8(10 ends) and 12-12(15 ends). But then Scott found a short 20 metre, straight mark, up and down the green to take him on to a lead of 17-12 and despite Adie wrestling possession of the jack to change the mark for a couple of ends, he soon found himself back on Scott’s and he held on to it for the last 3 ends to seal his victory finishing the game 21-14(23 ends)
After paying tribute to the greenkeepers and members of Old Shrewsbury BC for providing excellent bowling greens, refreshments and facilities, Competitions Secretary, Mike Potter also thanked Louise Cotton for her invaluable clerical assistance throughout the day along with green manager, Roger Cotton and football card seller, Linda Potter before calling on County Deputy President, Brenda Slingo to present prizes to the worthy competitors culminating with Newport’s Jarrett Cotterill receiving the Best Novice award and Scott Moseley, raising the Champions trophy.
