The Coors Meole Open sees 32 players vying for potentially the first Champion of Champion ticket available this season. Greg Smith, fresh from his Edgmond Open success today, will be looking for his first title in this, having lost in the final to Callum Wraight before. Greg has a tough opener against Tommy Johnstone, one of three over 60s vying for the £80 prize for best over 60. Callum is looking for a fifth success in this competition, and has an over 60 too in Staffordshire’s Dave Wright. The other one in the field is Rich Goddard, he plays former Bowring Open winner Scott Harries first round, who has recently moved to Sir John Bayley. Callum and Rich have four other Castlefields team mates in the draw. Dan Jones, impressive in qualifying, takes on Junior All England winner Josh Towey from Potteries first round, while Andy Judson has former Shropshire Merit winner Pete Farmer, Tom Palmer has the Bayley’s former George Masters winner Stuart Rutter and former Champion of Champion Mike Beer takes on former Fields man and County Handicap winner Keith Wall, now at St Georges.
Two Bayley team mates clash as Wrockwardine Wood Open winner Scott Simpson takes on former Newport Open finalist Ayden Smith. Martin Gaut was a finalist in this back in 2019, and has Connor Whitehall first round, with Midland Masters winner Alex Hassall taking on Paul Dale just above. Tom Killen has impressed so far this season and has Federation Merit winner Adam Penlington first game. Former Isle of Man June Festival winner Phil Lee takes on former Shropshire Merit winner Kiah Roberts, while All England winner Tom Vickers plays former Junior All England winner Andy Armstrong. The one former Meole player in the field, Chris Stretch, has King George Vs Paul Beechey first game, with another former Isle of Man winner Gareth Coates, playing Sir John Bayley man Chris Worthington, one of 6 Bayley boys in the final. Dan Taylor is one of those, and faces Danny Edmonds, who makes the long trip down from Cumbria.
