This year’s County Junior trials has been hailed as a big hit after more than two dozen under-18 bowlers took to the greens at Old Shrewsbury.
Watched by Shropshire’s junior selectors – and with qualified coaches on hand to offer advice – the youngsters took part in two singles competitions.
The main event for the more experienced bowlers was won by reigning Mid Shropshire League under-18 champion Dan Corbett, now signed for Trench, who beat Edgmond’s Ben Cutler 21-16 in the final. In the Semi Finals Dan defeated Luke Morris and Ben beat Eleanor Webb.
And a ‘newbies’ KO comp ended with Harry Grimston defeating Jamie Pritchard 11-2 to take the honours.
Junior selector Brenda Slingo said: “It was great – 26 juniors altogether and all the selectors were impressed with their bowling and attitude, with smiles all round. I’m so proud of them.”
So too were watching County President Simon Fullard and his deputy Andy Jones as the countdown to the opening British junior county championship match against Wales on May 11 started in style.
That game will see two 12-a-side teams playing legs at home and away, while some of the new recruits at the trials are now in the running for a six-a-side British junior event in Warrington.
