KGJ Insurance Shropshire Cup 2nd Round Review

There were no shocks in the 2nd round of the KGJ Insurance Shropshire Cup. The closest game was at Wrockwardine Wood where Newport beat St Georges by 22. Captain Steve Handley said “it was a good start in the front four despite a 21-4 loss (by St Georges best winner Nige Evans). Graham Handley cancelling that out with a 21-4 win for us (to be best winner), so we came off 14 up I think. A couple of good cards in the middle with Martyn France winning 7 and Alan Davidson 12 pretty much had won it for us going into the back two. St Georges were missing a couple and probably not as strong as they would have liked but job done on a tricky green that we didn’t know much about. We will see how we go in the Quarter Finals now.” The holders Castlefields defeated Pontesbury by 52 with Dan Jones best winner 9 and captain Andy Price best for Pontesbury 16. The team they beat in last year’s final, Wrockwardine Wood, also progressed with a 35 shot win over the Bowring. Best winner was Rob Clarke 9 with Karen Smith best for the Bowring 11.

Previous winners Prince of Wales Hotel got past Meole Brace by 52 at Allscott. Lee Walmsley was best winner 5 for them while for Meole it was Phil Tyler 9. Woore defeated Adderley by 48 at Tilstock, led by Cedric Bancroft and Jan Wakefield’s 12 wins. For Adderley it was Derek Cox best of their two winners 18. Bridgewater beat Greenfields by 27 on Edgmond, best winner being Greg Fordham 8, while for Greenfields it was Ian Blower 9. Chester Road defeated Bridgnorth by 62 chalks at Pontesbury, their best winner being Paul Welburn 5, and Liz Edwards best for the opposition 9. Shifnal had beaten Hadley USC on the night but due to playing a player who had played in the Senior County this season, contravening rule 1b, it meant that game went 21-0 in favour of Hadley and they won by 21.
