Please find a report by Competitions Secretary Mike Potter on the Junior County match yesterday against Yorkshire, and pictures from the three Junior County matches this season.
At Noon on a mild Summer’s day, Bowring BC began greeting the players, parents and officials of Shropshire and Yorkshire to the Wellington venue where the two teams were set to face each other in the third and final match of the 2023 Inter-County Championship. The spectators, sat around the old green hoped to see some good bowling, and they were not to be disappointed as the players shone on a green not used for such a match for many years.
At game number One. Wayd Pawlowski from 7-9 down to Tyler Patrick, quickly found himself on the wrong side of a score line that went on to 8-14 & 11-19 until Wayd, showed why he is team Captain by after gaining control and took 7 ends on the bounce to earn himself the Shropshire player of the match award on his way to a fine 21-19 winning card.
At game number Two. Luke Morris quite possibly consider himself to have been our unluckiest player of the day as he quickly found went 1-13 behind the class player and vice captain, Scott Singleton. As Luke managed to slip by or through end after end, it wasn’t long before he lay 6-20 before Scott ended his agony 21-8.
At game number Three. Jordan Millman had to fight hard to stay in touch as Ashton Ainley-Wood went 9-5 up. But after Jordan got back and levelled the game 14-14, he took control to finish with a 21-16 card.
At game number Four. James Sanderson and Jacob Hatfield-Goodall were evenly matched until, from holding a slender 10-9 lead, James pushed himself on to a 17-10 lead and after this was cut to 18-15, he held on enough to register a good 21-17 win.
At game number Five. Austin Wilson started strongly as he led 11-3 until Logan Preston fought hard to get back and level it 11-11 & 16-16. However, from 18-18, Austin just edged it to get his win of 21-19.
At game number Six. Daniel Corbett and Freddie Boscombe shared the most evenly matched game of the day as the scores went down the card 5-5, 9-9 and on to 18-18, 19-19 & 20-20. With either player deserving the win, luck favoured Freddie to win 21-20.
At game number Seven. Tad Broome was slow off the mark as Corey Fountain forged ahead 7-0 and 12-5. But Tad clawed his way back to very nearly level it to trail 17-18 before his chances were ended by Corey as Tad went down 17-21.
At game number Eight. Zoe Fenwick found the going tough in the first half of her game against Lucas Ward as she went from 4-5 down to trail 9-16 before finding her weight and even levelled the game 17-17 but eventually lost out 18-21.
At game number Nine. Jarrett Cotterill saw his 9-6 lead over Harry Chadwick dissolve away to 12-12 and on to a 13-18 deficit that Harry soon converted to a 15-21 loss for Jarrett.
At game number Ten. Eloise Fenwick turned a tied game from 5-5 & 9-9 with Reigan Lunn into a good 15-10 lead before Reigan came back to level at 16-16 but from 18-18, Eloise made it over the winning line 21-18.
At game number Eleven. Thomas Oare went pointless for 9 ends to trail 0-14 against Jude Hatfield-Goodall but then from 1-16 Thomas took the next 8 ends to tie the game 16-16 and then after sharing the next 4 ends, Jude got home to win 21-18.
At game number Twelve. Harry Wilson saw his 11-5 lead disappear as Harley Tattersley took control and turn the game on its head to lead 19-11 that he soon made Yorkshire’s second best card, winning 12-13.
The final result at Bowring BC saw Shropshire 214 – 236 Yorkshire +22
The final result at Golcar BC saw Shropshire 165 – 243 Yorkshire +78
The final Totals overall saw Shropshire 379 – 479 Yorkshire +100
