KGJ Insurance County Cup 2nd Round Review

There were no shocks in the KGJ Insurance County Cup 2nd Round as all the higher ranked teams won their ties. The closest game was at Meole Brace where St Georges overcame Burway by just 8 chalks. Captain Tony Rhodes said “both teams were understrength last night but a really competitive game which could have gone either way. Luckily we got over the line. Green was excellent and sharp, a real challenge.” Clay Flattley was their best winner 4 at number 12 to win the game for the Dragons, while for Burway it was Kiah Roberts who was best winner 7. There was another close game in Shrewsbury as Hanwood beat Meole Brace on Castlefields by 17 to please skipper Rich Lawson. “Really pleased to get through, it was a really good solid team performance on a very well prepared green which proved to be a tricky pace. We always had our noses in front and again I was really pleased how we battled for every chalk. Darren Wellings and Jon Mansell were our best winners (10 and 12 respectively) and credit to Rich Addison who ran out from 19-14 down and Andy Duckett who won 14 from 10-0 down. Had those two cards gone the other way it may well have been a different outcome. We look forward to our first Quarter Final in quite some time and whoever we draw we will approach the game with the same attitude as the last two rounds.” Chris Jones was best winner for Meole 11.

There was another close game on the Bowring where Ifton defeated Chester Road by 20 chalks. Joey Williams was best winner 10, while Martin Lloyd was best for the Roaders 8. Highley defeated Wem USC by 28 chalks at Sir John Bayley to please captain Reece Farr. “We’re delighted to reach the quarter finals, we looked pretty impressive against Wem with a few players missing. Looking forward to see who we draw in the quarter finals and we should be back to full strength!” Best winner was Jack Hill and Jacob Ash 7, with Simon Lewis best for Wem 4. The other all Premier League clash saw Sir John Bayley beat Hanmer by 60  chalks at Hanwood. Ayden Smith was best winner for them 3, with Tommy Lowndes was best for Hanmer 8. There were no shocks in the three ties involving Non Premier League clubs. Sinclair got the closest losing by 36 against Adderley at Pontesbury. They had 4 winners with Simon Hall the best of them 5. But Adderley had three single figure winners led by Harry Wilson and Jamie Brookes 7. Horsehay did get three winners against Castlefields at Chester Road, Phil Wain the best 11, while Tom Palmer was best for the Fields 4. Wrockwardine Wood beat Prince of Wales Hotel by 86 overall, Martin Williams the best of 10 winners 21-2. For the Prince it was Ade Jennings who was best winner 17.

The draw for the Quarter Finals will take place on Thursday 24th May.

The Quarter Finals will take place on Wednesday 7th June.

Players need to have played FOUR league games for the Quarter Finals.
