Thank you to Competitions Secretary Mike Potter below for the report and pictures of the 2022 Father & Son competition held on Saturday 18th June at Meole Brace.
With a wet showery day forecast, a field of 24 pairings and their supporters descended on the Shrewsbury sports complex of Meole Brace to contest this year’s Father & Son Doubles. With its two immaculately presented greens, all were set to set for high class bowls, and for those of us watching, despite the showers, were not disappointed as the day culminated with new winners, Carl & Ben Hinton getting the better of the seasoned doubles pairing of Wayne & Steven Rogers, 21-5 in the final.

Highlights from Quarter finals
Carl & Ben Hinton saw a 9-9 tied game slide away quickly as Geoff & Josh Warner raced on to lead 20-12 only for them to stall that allowed Carl & Ben to win 5 ends unanswered and runout winners, 21-20. Jamie & Harry Brookes saw a healthy 14-8 lead evaporate in 2 ends as Stuart & Harry Church scored maximum chalks to lead 16-14, then the Church’s hit a triple to regain the lead 17-16, from there both pairs matched each other that eventually saw the Brookes’ pair home 21-20. Paul & Rhys Marshall, from 6-5 up took control of the game to move to 19-9 before Simon & Haydn Lewis showed late signs of recovering before the game ended with the Marshall’s winning 21-14. Wayne & Steven Rogers had to fight back from 0-6 down to level 8-8 with Phil & Aaron King and then accelerated away, scoring 14 chalks in 4 ends and ran out 21-8 winners.
Highlights from the Semi-finals
Carl & Ben Hinton got off to a strong start against Jamie & Harry Brookes as they were 11-1(7 ends) which was quickly turned into 15-5(13 ends) and the game was soon over 21-6(17 ends).
And in an almost carbon copy of a game, Wayne & Steven Rogers raced to lead Paul & Rhys Marshall 18-1(9 ends) and that game was to end within a half dozen ends as the Rogers’ won 21-5(14 ends)
The Final
The paths the finalists had trod on their way to the final were somewhat different as the 4 games Wayne & Steven Rogers had won were all single figure scores, only conceding 24 chalks. While, Carl & Ben Hinton scraped through 2 of their games that included a 20 and 19 win.
The final looked like it might be a closely matched game as the Rogers’, looking to erase the 4 times defeated in recent finals and take the title for a 3rd time came up against the Hinton’s, chasing their 1st.
The game began with the Rogers’ taking ends 1 & 3 to trail 2-3(3 ends) then with the jack being knocked and edged around the ends all in the Hinton’s favour saw them take 6 ends on the trot to open up a strong 16-2(9 ends)lead. After conceding a triple chalk score, the game closed with the Hinton’s scoring their 4th triple chalk end of their own to win 21-5(13 ends).
County President/Competition Secretary, Mike Potter congratulated club Steward, Terry Rollins of host club Meole Brace BC and its members for the provision of excellent greens, facilities and refreshments before presenting prizes to the deserving players and the Trophy to New Champions, Carl & Ben Hinton.
