Telford won the Challenge Match for the MND Foundation by 13 chalks over their Shrewsbury counterparts on St Georges top green. They were always ahead after a clean sweep of the first four, Mike Wainwright leading the way 21-7 after virtually running out from 7-6 up against Darren Wellings in an excellent display of bowling. The other three cards looked like they were going the way of Shrewsbury, with Ash Wellings 14-8 up, Mark Shore 17-11 up and Doug Edwards 12-7 up. But Scott Harries, Paul Evans and Scott Simpson all fought back to win 18, 18 and 15 respectively to give Telford a 26 shot lead. Adie Rowe started a fightback as he was always ahead using longer marks to lead 16-8 and win 14 against Alex Jones. But Stu Rutter won 16 after holding off a fightback by Chris Jones after being 18-12 up, and Ayden Smith added a 10 win, mainly in the corners, against Dave Redge. Jamie King and Gary Neal had a close game, with Gary coming back from 16-10 down to get 20. This meant the Telford side had a lead of 36 after eight games. But Mike Beer then put in a player of the match performance to win 8 against homester Pete Farmer to give Shrewsbury a chance. Adam Jones then led 8-0 over Cheryl Caswell, and Phil Lyttle 11-4 over Pete Cookson, to threaten a further fightback but Telford joint captain Rob Burroughs led 12-1 over Mark Thomas. Cheryl got back to 8 across, and Pete fought back to 13-10 down to ensure that Telford got over the line. Rob won 16, which Adam cancelled out 16, and then Phil triumphed 11 to reduce the deficit to 13.
Thank you to St Georges for hosting, and Paul Beer for organising this event. Thank you to Mike Potter for bringing his PA system for us to use. It looks like over £400 was raised on the night for the MND Foundation. Thank you to Local Print Pros for sponsoring this event. Thank you to all bowlers who took part tonight, and to all four captains for helping organise the two teams.
We would like to wish Lynn Pritchatt and their team all the best in completing their journey.
