County Doubles 2016

Shropshire County Doubles Competition played on the greens of Bridgewater Bowling Club on Sun 28th August 2016 County President, Phil Scott, before relinquishing the reigns as competition secretary also brought the curtain down on the county’s domestic season taking the County Doubles to Bridgewater BC where the 30 entries were treated to warm late summer sunshine that saw the Newport, Dave Rhodes & Sam Millward become the latest to add their names to the impressive trophy as County Doubles Champions after defeating defending champions, Scott Harries & Jamie King, 21-13 in the final of the competition Highlights of the action included Quarter finals: Dave Rhodes & Sam Millward took control from 5-5 of their game against Jamie & Jack Brookes to race to 18-5 and it wasn’t long before they finished the game 21-8. Scott Harries & Jamie King were pushed hard by Stuart Clee & Josh Bradburn until from 11-11 they reeled off three ends to take them to the edge 20-13 only to be pegged back as Clee & Bradburn got to 18 and looked set to tie before King delivered an inch perfect bowl to snatch victory 21-18. Ian McDonald & Martin Gaut after taking the score from 8-8 to lead Gary & Connor Whitehall 16-9 who then nearly pulled level but from trailing 15-16 they could not stop their opponents from running out as McDonald & Gaut won 21-15. Steve Duckett & Darryl Edwards forged out a strong 12-1 lead before Chris Worthington & Gavin Taylor hit back to half the deficit to 6-12 before being hit themselves as Duckett & Edwards went onto 16-6 and from 17-10 got home to win 21-10 Semi Finals: After an even start from the pairings, Scott Harries & Jamie King utilising a round 22 metre mark to great effect, raced from 8-6 to lead Ian McDonald & Martin Gaut 18-6 which quickly turned into a win and book their final ticket 21-7. Meanwhile, Dave Rhodes & Sam Millward were using a falling mark equally to good effect as they fought back from 2-8 down to tie 9-9 with Steve Duckett & Darryl Edwards and pushed onto lead 18-11 and completed the win 21-13. The final: The final began with the two pairings desperately trying to get on their preferred marks with Dave Rhodes & Sam Millward making the early running as they turned a 5-0 lead into 11-4 before defending champions, Scot Harries & Jamie King changed to a 24 metre straight mark up and down the green that paid off to the extent of them pushing into a 13-12 lead of their that forced their opponents to also change marks to a 35 metre length across the middle that too paid off as Harries & King’s efforts often scraped in and threw the ends that saw Dave Rhodes & Sam Millward take full advantage as they ran out to complete, in 21 ends, a 21-13 victory to win the title as County Doubles champions 2016. After thanking the members of Bridgewater for their hospitality, Competition Sec./County President, Phil Scott presented the prizes to the deserving pairings and the Champions trophy to the delighted Dave Rhodes & Sam Millward.
