Dave Card Memorial Rose Bowl

The Dave Card Memorial Rose Bowl has been played for since 2009. It acts as a qualifier for the BCGBA Centenary Mixed Pairs, held on Saturday 5th October at Horwich RMI, with us usually having two qualifiers, the finalists, but this does depend on the number of entries. SCGBA Mixed Doubles Competition played on the green of Donnington Woood BC on Sun. 30th June 2019. Pre-lim Dan Taylor & Sian Skelton 21-20 John Clarke & Helen Clee Quarter -finals Dan Taylor & Sian Skelton 21-14 Martin & Angela Gaut Rich Morris & Cheryl Caswell 21-16 Mark & Emma Shore Rich Lawson & Molly Sullivan 21-10 Jamie King & Sally Clee Dave & Juliette King 21-16 Stuart & Jackie Rutter Semi-finals Dan Taylor & Sian Skelton 21-10 Rich Morris & Cheryl Caswell Rich Lawson & Molly Sullivan 21-18 Dave & Juliette King Final Dan Taylor & Sian Skelton 21-14 Rich Lawson & Molly Sullivan The 9 entries arrived at Donnington Wood on blustery yet sunny day to contest the mixed doubles competition for the Dave Card Rose Bowl and, for the champions, a ticket to the Centenary Doubles finals day in Lancashire, later in the season. In a pre-lim game, watched by the other competitors, John Clarkr & Helen Clee took control of the jack to take a 13-3 lead over Dan Taylor & Sian Skelton and went on to 18-7 before they stalled and Dan & Sian finished the game by taking 10 of the last 11 ends, winning 21-20. Highlights of the quarter finals Dan Taylor & Sian Skelton took advantage of their playing in a pre-lim as they moved from 9-0 to 15-8 as Martin & Angela Gaut struggled to get going and maintained their lead through to winning 21-14. Rich Morris & Cheryl Caswell went from 4-4 to lead Mark & Emma Shore 13-6 before they hit back and levelled the game again 15-15, however, a full house 4 at the next end proved decisive for Rich & Cheryl to win 21-16. Rich Lawson & Molly Sullivan turned a slender 8-7 lead into 18-7 over Jamie King & Sally Clee in four ends and then matched them to finish 21-10 winners. Dave & Juliette King forged into leads of 13-5 and 17-6 and despite Stuart & Jackie Rutter hitting three triple scoring ends, Dave & Juliette held on to win 21-16. Highlights of the semi finals Dan Taylor & Sian Skelton began strongly to go 11-3 up before Rich Morris & Cheryl Caswell tried closing te gap, however from 11-8 Dan & Sian pushed on to 19-8 before finishing it off 21-10. An evenly matched Rich Lawson & Molly Sullivan and Dave & Juliette King shared the first dozen ends to tie 9-9 Then Rich & Molly went on a run to lead 15-11 and after Dave & Juliette had a run of their own, Rich & Molly went through from 15-18 to win 21-18. Highlights of the Final Early exchanges in the final saw Dan Taylor & Sian Skelton dominate the game using a 24 metre mark up and down the middle of the green to good effect as they raced to 9-0 (6 ends), 16-3 (13 ends) and 19-5 (18 ends) before Rich Lawson & Molly Sullivan eventually got onto their preferred corner to corner length and clawed their way into the game but could not keep it long enough as Dan & Sian eventually ended the contest 21-14(24ends) Competition Secretary, Mike Potter thanked host club, Donnington Wood for supplying a quality green and refreshments before asking county President Mike Beckett to present the prizes to the competitors and finally the Dave Card Rose Bowl to the worthy champions, Dan Taylor & Sian Skelton. Due to player unavailability, runners up Rich Lawson & Molly Sullivan will represent Shropshire on 5th October in the finals day of the BCGBA Centenary Mixed Doubles.
