Mid Shropshire made it a fourth triumph in five years as they defeated Whitchurch B in the final of the Veterans Inter League at Archibald Worthington. They won by 12 with 6 winners, number eight Mick Jones the best of them 15, while for the hosts league it was Eddie Broad who was best of their 2, 21-14. The groups were very tight contests, with Group A, having just three teams, playing the three matches at the same time, with one on the green from each match. All three games were close, Whitchurch A beating Mid Shropshire by 4 the closest, with Brian Jones best winner for the hosts 13 and Dave Brown by the same score for the opposition. Whitchurch A though lost to Market Drayton by 5 chalks, despite two best wins of 13 by Richard Mottershead and Dave Watkins. It was the 5 winners of Market Drayton that won them the game, led by David Stretch's 14 win. Mid Shropshire earned the biggest win which won them the group, by beating Market Drayton by 10. Elsie Pugh was their best winner 11, with Alan Boulton's best win of 12 not enough for their opponents, despite it being 4 winners apiece. In Group B and three teams had two wins each, with Whitchurch B coming out as winners on aggregate by just 6 chalks. They beat Market Drayton Seniors by 27 first of all with 6 winners, the best of them being Les Markham 9. Peter Matthew was best for the Seniors winning 10. North Shropshire Ladies beat Wem & District by 2 chalks as they held off a spirited fightback. Ann Speake was best winner for the Ladies 12, with Reg Reece winning 10 for Wem. Whitchurch B then beat North Shropshire by 26 to be in pole position. Les Markham was their best 12, with Mo Corley best for the opposition 15. Wem & District bounced back by beating Market Drayton Seniors by 35, Les Jones their best 8, and Bernard Regan 17 the best for the Seniors. Into the last games and Wem & District beat Whitchurch B by 7, falling 3 chalks short of going through themselves, despite Reg Reece's best win of 14. Eddie Broad was best for Whitchurch by the same score. In the other game North Shropshire Ladies beat Market Drayton Seniors by 33, Ann Speak the best 9, and Peter Matthews win of 14 the best for the Seniors. Well done to the Mid Shropshire League.
