Below is a preview of the four ties taking place tonight in the KGJ Insurance County Cup.
1st round replay - St Georges vs. Newport at Bowring non-prem
St Georges and Newport meet again after confusion over the league rules which led to Glyn Picknell playing when ineligible. Both teams will be fired up given all the talking since then, but St Georges have the edge after beating Newport in that game, however they won't have Glyn to pick from this time around.
Quarter Final - Hanwood vs. Wem USC at Sinclair
Wem USC had an excellent win last round against the holders Sir John Bayley. Captain Scott Thomas says " we are looking forward to a tough challenge against a quality Hanwood team on Wednesday. They have to start as favourites, but having knocked out the holders in the last round, we are confident of giving any team a game on a neutral green. We have nothing to lose so will see if we can cause another upset." Hanwood came from behind last round against Highley, and will look for their first Semi Final for a while. Skipper Mark Shore knows it is a "tough one off game. We beat them at their place earlier in the season but they have picked up some form since then so we will not be underestimating them."
Quarter Final - Meole Brace vs. Chester Road at Horsehay
Both teams haven't had a good run in this for a while now, and will be desperate for a Semi Final spot. Chester Road have struggled in the league but know a good cup run may help them improve their form in that. Meole have been doing well in the league so far, and will look to move that into cup form. Skipper Andy Wigginton knows it is a "big game for the Meole boys, always nice to try and get to play a semi on a Saturday night even though dates have been changed. The captain and Will Tyler are missing but confident the rest of troops can get revenge on last year's loss. They are a consistent cup side over the years so can't be taken lightly. Always have a tough but friendly game with Chester Road so the lads are looking forward to it and a type of cup game that could go either way. But hopefully our lads will prevail as they deserve a cup run as they have been putting the hours in on the green "
Quarter Final - Bylet vs. Castlefields on Sir John Bayley Bottom Green
Bylet will look to cause a big upset over record holder Castlefields on Sir John Bayley. But this Bylet side is the best for a long time now, and have been performing well so far this season. Skipper Scott Harries says "they don't get much tougher than this really, the reigning league champions standing in the way of a County Cup Semi Final spot. Me and the lads are well up for it though and really looking forward to pitting ourselves against some of Shropshire's finest talents. We know we will have to be on point from the very first bowl to the very last as they will be heavy favourites. I have pretty much a full side to pick from and I know we will give it our all. On any given day we can beat anyone, we know that. It'll need to be one almighty performance but I believe in my lads and that we could cause a big upset." Castlefields have been quietly going about their business so far this season and have produced some excellent performances so far this season, especially on the road. But they have had some ropey ones too, and had to survive a scare last game against Wrockwardine Wood.
