KGJ Insurance County Cup 1st Round Review

Wem shock holders, Castlefields hold off Wrockwardine, Meole beat Ifton

Wem USC shocked the holders in the 1st round of the KGJ Insurance County Cup as they beat Sir John Bayley by 7 at Monkmoor. Captain Scott Thomas said "we were pleased with the team performance last night. From 1-12 we battled for every chalk and proved once again that we are not a team to be taken lightly on a neutral green. Mike Dulson and Fred Bailey (best winners 9) were our stand out performers and got to grips with the green really well. We look forward to the next game whoever that may be against." Captain Chris Worthington was best for the holders 10 as they relinquished their grip on the trophy. Castlefields had a scare as they beat Wrockwardine Wood by 13 on Bridgnorth. Skipper Alan Peach said "Wrockwardine played very well against us. We had to dig deep to beat them. I just felt our strength in depth told in the end. A special mention to Bridgnorth bowling club for their hospitality." Rich Goddard was best winner 8 for the record holders and Stuart Rutter best for the Wrockites 6. Meole Brace surprised recent finalists Ifton by 43 on Prees. Julian Cooke and Will Tarrell were best winners 5 for them, with Richie Griffiths best for Ifton 9. Hanwood overcame a strong start by Highley to beat them by 25 on Charlton. Nick Davies won 5 for them to cancel out a 5 win for Dave East.

Two Premier League teams avoided upsets. Bylet had free single figure winners in the front four on Burway to comfortably beat Prince Hotel by 54, with Rob Fuller their best 2. The Price though did have 5 winners, Rob Jones best winner 3. Hadley USC lost by 48 to Chester Road on Battlefield.
