KGJ Insurance Shropshire Cup 1st Round Review

St Georges win close battle, Telepost edge home, Favourites safely through

St Georges won a close battle with fellow Mid Shropshire Division One team Bowring in the 1st round of the KGJ Insurance Shropshire Cup. They only won by 7 chalks as 8 winners proved enough despite two single figure wins by Bowring led by Brian Jarvis 7. Graham Turner and Paul Beer were best winners for the Dragons, 21-12. The other Mid Shropshire clash wasn't so close with Newport defeating Sinclair by 48, Steve Handley their best winner 7, with the opposition's being Stuart Church 13. Mid Shropshire side Wrockwardine Wood dipped out against Telepost by 15. Telepost skipper Shaun Bould said "as expected this was a close match between two good sides with Telepost just edging it with the extra single figure card which proved significant. Well played Wrockwardine you certainly made us work for it!" Sam O'Nions won 5 for them with Ange Gaut best winner 3 for the Wrockites. Castlefields, who beat Telepost in the final two years ago, defeated Adderley by 39. Castlefields captain Martin Codd said "Adderley put out a strong first 5 but after having the first card off losing 3 we clawed it back to have a slight lead. There after 2 single figure wins put us in control and we saw the game out comfortably." Dave Bamford was that 3 card for Adderley but Graham Wall returned the score for the Fields. Previous winners Prince of Wales Hotel were the biggest winners on the night by 130 against SAHA with a full 12 winners, Paul Marshall the best of them 5. Allscott also won big against Greenfields by 119, Tony Hayward their best winner 2 with Neil Harris the only winner for the Fields 12. Sir John Bayley also won by over 100, beating Church by 104. Ian Delves and Ben Hudson were best winners 6, as Phil Laker was the only winner for the Oswestry based side, 15. One of the favourites for the crown, Hadley USC, beat District by 43. Ian Thomas won 5 with Carl Hinton best winner for the Whitchurch side 9. Another Whitchurch side did well in Bridgewater, who got past Bridgnorth by 69. Andy Foster was their best winner 6, with Lesley Winwood best for the opposition 9. Bridgnorth side Bylet won though, defeating Old Shrewsbury by 71 with Brian Walters best winner 6 and Andy Pullen and Rich Jones best for Old Shrewsbury. Battlefield only dropped one game but only won by 49 against Madeley Cricket Club. John Roberts was that winner 11, with Alex Evans best for the winners 9. Hadnall beat Trench by 35 with Darren Fitzpatrick leading the way winning 9, and Shavorne Osbourne 6 for Trench. Pontesbury defeated Charlton by 80 with Danny Blyth winning 0 and Mick Cornes 14 for the Telford side. Charlton captain Alan Munn said "we put up a good fight against a class side only to lose by 80 but did have five winners on not an easy green. It was always an uphill struggle as we were 45 down off four. An excellent win for super sub Ann Withington at number 5 who bowls in the 5th Division, she beat Tony France 21-20 in a tight game." Hodnet got past Monkmoor by 46 with Philip Hughes best winner 5 and Phil Whatmough 9 for the Monk. Prees had a good win against Horsehay by 11 chalks. Captain Tom Cooper said "it was a tricky green. Dan Whelan and John Gleave stepped in and did well as we had 2/3 players missing so had a weakened team." Luke Grocott was their best winner 9, with Gareth Jones and Richard Jones best for the Telford side 11. Burway enjoyed a good win over Meole Brace by 29 despite struggling to get a team. Skipper Anthony Rogers said "with both teams missing key players from their normal line up the match could have gone either way. Cheryl Lloyd dropped straight on it and set the tone beating Aiden Hughes 3. Jordan Woodfield and Pete Phillips had a great game of 2 halves, but Jordan came back strong to win 18. Ian Riddell played a faultless game against Anthony Rogers by winning 9 and clawing back the shots. With Burway having three games won to 10 the shots were in the bag."
