KGJ Insurance Shropshire Cup 1st round Preview

Shelton face tough test, Castlefields & Telepost hope to reach another final, Mid-Shropshire Clashes

Tanners Shropshire Division Three side Shelton have entered the KGJ Insurance Shropshire Cup for the first time and face a tough test in the 1st round against last year's runners up and previous winners the Prince Hotel. Spokesman Brian Selley "has told my team the Prince are expected to win so we got nothing to lose. All the pressure is on the to perform on the night, if they do they will win easy, if they don't we may have a chance. But it is good to play better bowlers. It has been a couple of years since we played on Old Shrewsbury, if it's quick it can be very tricky with plenty of dips and hollows." Castlefields won this competition back in 2017 and face Market Drayton and Whitchurch Division One team Adderley on Sinclair. Skipper Martin Codd said "we are expecting a very tough game, we are missing 5 or 6 regulars but they will also be short due to premier league players unavailable. They have some quality players to call on though and they are not top of the Whitchurch league for nothing." Telepost were runners up in that final and will be fancying their chances of going one better given their good start in the Tanners Shropshire League. They have Mid Shropshire Division One side Wrockwardine Wood on Bridgewater, with captain Shaun Bould saying "we are hoping to have another good run in the cups this year but hopefully go that one step closer to silverware which has eluded us the last few seasons. We take nothing for granted against a strong opposition in Wrockwardine Wood and expect another close match on a good but tricky green at Bridgewater." Wrockwardine Wood have lost some players from their team but remain a strong team in the Mid Shropshire League. Captain Josh Cotton knows it is a "tough game against a good Telepost side who beat us in the quarters last year. But we will try and cause an upset." There are a couple of tasty Mid Shropshire Division One clashes. Newport take on Sinclair at Charlton, with the two teams having played last Friday when Sinclair got 5 winners at Newport. Sinclair skipper Stuart Church says it "should be a good even contest on a green that's totally different to either of our greens. There will be a couple of close individual games too." Another clash sees St Georges take on the Bowring at Sir John Bayley bottom green with both teams flying at the top of the league. Hadley USC are also up the top of the Mid Shropshire League and take on Market Drayton Division One side District at Castlefields.  Charlton of Mid Shropshire Division Two will be looking to upset Tanners Shropshire Division One side Pontesbury at Hodnet, with Tanners Shropshire Division Three side Greenfields aim to defeat Allscott from Mid Shropshire Division One on District. Church of Tanners Shropshire Division Two aim to cause Mid Shropshire Division One side Sir John Bayley some problems at Pontesbury. Monkmoor currently ply their trade in the Wem and Shrewsbury leagues and play Market Drayton and Whitchurch Division Two side Hodnet at Hadley USC. Bridgewater are Champions of the Market Drayton League and will be expected to progress against Division Two side Bridgnorth from the Mid Shropshire League on Greenfields. Two Tanners Shropshire Division Two sides clash at Bridgnorth as Burway and Meole Brace face each other. Hadnall are also from Division Two, and will fancy their chances of upsetting Trench from a division higher in the Mid Shropshire League at Telepost. Bylet of Mid Shropshire Division One and Old Shrewsbury from the same division in the Tanners Shropshire could be a close clash on Prees. The same matchup occurs at Wem USC where Battlefield play Madeley Cricket Club. A reminder that no players who have played a Salop Leisure Shropshire Premier Bowling League game can play in this round, as well as anyone who has played in the BCGBA Men's Senior County this or last year (women county bowlers can play in this competition). £6 per team needs to be given to the host club.
