Shropshire Senior Merit Qualifiers Preview – Shrewsbury & Telford

The defending champion Spencer Clarke starts his defence of the Shropshire Senior Merit at Allscott Heath. He plays there alongside Stuart Rutter, as well as Roy Bradburn and Stuart Clee, both in good form at the start of this season. Other young guns there include Liam Stevens, Martin Gaut, who has reached the final of the Meole Open this season, Aaron King, Kieran Buckley and Ayden Smith. Down the road at the Bowring and former semi finalist Tony Rhodes plays there alongside son Matthew Rhodes and namesake Dave Rhodes. Martin Williams has broken into the county team again, with Chris Worthington and Tom Roden having points to prove after dropping out of it. Scott Harries is a former Bowring Open winner and will be expected to progress, along former homesters Dave King, Ash Gregory and John Cooke. The other Telford qualifier is Donnington Wood where Jon Palmer makes his first appearance in this competition. There are former home players there to, including Pete Grimston, Kane Beaman, Josh Bradburn and Phil King. Dave Lloyd has just got back into the county team, while Russ Pegram is a major player in this competition as he looks to qualify for the first time. In Shrewsbury and all eyes will be on whether last year's runner up Callum Wraight can qualify and go one better. He is at Bayston Hill, alongside team mates Adie Rowe and Keith Walton. Wayne Phillips is one of our best players not to win this competition, while Meole Brace have several players there including Nige Bound and Mark Thomas. Monkmoor has three former winners in Colin Beaman, Rich Goddard and Kiah Roberts, as well as former runner up Mike Beer. Darren Wellings will be expected to be challenging too, while last year's Junior Merit Kieran Jones will look to make his mark on the Senior stage.  Meole Brace has one former winner in Wayne Rogers, with Paul Williams, Andy Duckett and Ash Wellings all expected to go close too. Adam Jones did well in the Meole Open there so should have good memories, as well as Mark Shore. Craig Wilson is a former player there so will have excellent green knowledge.
