KGJ Insurance Shropshire Cup Semi Finals Report & Final Venue

Highley and Prince of Wales Hotel will meet in the final of the KGJ Insurance Shropshire Cup on Saturday 4th August at 6.30 p.m. at Sir John Bayley bottom green. Highley came past last year's runner ups Telepost in a match involving several single figure cards. It was close throughout, with Highley leading by one after four, but the runners up hit back with Mick Pritchard's 6 win to lead by 8 after eight cards off. The turning point though was Ian Thompson winning 2, and with two more 19 winners at the back, it meant Highley reached their first ever Shropshire final. Captain Geoff Wylde commented on a "very competitive game on a green where the weight was tricky. It was fairly tight all the way and one good card either way was likely to decide it. Early good cards cancelled each other until Ian Thompson played a stormer an number 9 and tipped the game our way. With the other 3 cards at the back all tight it was ultimately the difference."

Prince of Wales Hotel were awesome in beating the holders Castlefields with 11 winners on a quick Greenfields green. Only Perry Evans won for the Fields, 21-16, as the Prince racked up the winners in a 66 shot success, Ian Smith the best of the winners 8. Skipper Ian Smith said it was "an absolutely stunning team performance by all Prince players. The green was flying and freaky but everyone took it in their stride and played it as they saw it. We thought we were in with a shout beforehand but would never have predicted winning by that many. It is a privilege to be the Prince captain this year with such a great bunch of people. Looking forward to the final now and hope to enjoy it as it will be another big challenge for us to play yet another strong team."

  • So the teams' attention now turns to the final, with teams to be released on here on Sunday evening.
