KGJ Shropshire Cup Quarter Finals Review

Castlefields survive another scare, Prince power on, Highley and Telepost through

The holders Castlefields survived another scare against District as they reached the Semi Finals of the KGJ Insurance Shropshire Cup. They beat them by just 13 on Trench, with captain Graham Wall admitting it was a "tough game as expected. A brilliant performance by young Ben Hinton at number 5 (best winner 7) put us in trouble but fought back to get over the line with 3 other winners in the middle and a vintage performance from Martin Codd at number 8 (to be best winner 6). Delighted to be in the semis looking forward to a local battle against another previous winner of this competition." 2016 winners Prince Hotel will face them in the Semi Finals after beating Hadley USC by 33 overall, but it wasn't as comfortable as it seems. Skipper Ian Smith commented "after 8 games we were level on aggregate. Our back four players bowled superbly well with 3 single figure wins on a very tricky green. Have to mention that Atcham club were excellent hosts with food and cold drinks being available all night." Chris Jones won 8 and Clair Barker and Ian Marshall both 9 as they blew Hadley's back four away, with Jim Fletcher best winner for the Huskies 10. Last year's runners up Telepost came past Wrockwardine Wood comfortably on Prees by 51. Skipper Rob Jones commented "fair play to Wrockwardine they gave it a really good go. Excellent game played in a good spirit. Our first four got us off to a flyer which we managed to maintain for the rest of the game. The final result maybe flattered us somewhat but we move on." Lee Barker and Shaun Bould were their best winners 11, while Tony Garmson was best for the Wrockites 15. Highley made the Semi Finals again, like they did in 2016, as they got past Bowring by 46. Captain Geoff Wylde said "we got off to a decent start against a good first four for Bowring and managed to maintain that lead with a single figure winner at number 8 helping us to seal the win." Dave East was best winner for them 6, while for Bowring it was Jamie Fletcher 13, as Highley now face Telepost in the next round. So the Semi Finals are on Wednesday 25th July as Prince of Wales Hotel take on Castlefields at Greenfields no.2, and Telepost versus Highley on Bridgewater big green.
