Leaders beat holders, Bayley find extra gear, Ifton & Bowring edge throughThe leaders of the Salop Leisure Shropshire Premier Bowling League beat the holders of the KGJ Insurance County Cup at the Quarter Final stage. Newport defeated St Georges by 34 overall at Sinclair, pleasing captain Sam Millward. "The lads were brilliant last night, really ground out a result. Was looking like it would be level off the front at one point but Pete Farmer and Tom Langford really stuck in and ground out wins. Mark Selley and Mick Jones (best winner 11) were brilliant and Dale Rudrum was class to beat Clay Flattley. All in all a great performance!" The best of the holders' three winners was Dave King 12. Sir John Bayley were pushed by Hadley USC and found themselves only level after eight blocks off, with Dave Price their best winning 6. But the Bayley then had four single figure winners, led by Paul Evans' 4 win, to win by 55 overall at the Bylet. Ifton continued their impressive cup form with a comeback win over Wem USC on Hanwood. Captain Dickie Jones was "very happy to have got through in a game that could have gone either way. We didn't start off well being 16 down after the first four. Three winners in the middle put us two in front, Andy Hughes then won 21-9 (to be best winner) to put us 14 up the three other games were all close. We now look forward to the semi finals."Pete Bound and Dave Hanson were best winners for Wem, both winning 13. Bowring edged out Chester Road by 24 on Old Shrewsbury. Captain Rich Lawson was "really pleased with how the team played last night, it's a young side but they did themselves proud, I didn't see Josh Bradburn's game but by all accounts he was superb against Martin, we managed to get a lead off the first four and then Jack Whitehead gave us a bit of a cushion playing great to win 5. Bit of a turning point was Ash coming back from 13-7 down to beat Mark Holland, it might have been a different story otherwise. In the back we managed to maintain the lead with Jamie King bowling fantastic to win 5 (to be joint best winner with Jack), overall I'm thoroughly delighted with the win." Chris Stretch was best winner for the Whitchurch side, 10.
