KGJ Insurance County Cup 2nd Round Report

Hadley shock Bylet, Newport beat Fields again, Ifton cup form continues

Hadley USC caused the shock of the round as they drew with Bylet and won on the most winners rule in round two of the KGJ Insurance County Cup. Both teams scored 222 points, but Hadley had 7 winners compared to Bylet's 5. It was a close match throughout with no single figure winners, best for Hadley was Phil King's 12 with Jason Groom likewise for the Premier League side on the Bowring, winning 11. Captain Ray Gregory said "it was a very good night, close from start to finish. It was a great team effort and I could not have asked for any more from my team. Let's hope we can carry this onto the next game." The other non premier teams though didn't quite manage a shock. Prince of Wales Hotel staged a late rally on Hodnet against St Georges but the damage had been done by the first four, as the holders led by 42 after Nige Evans had won 3. But they kept it respectful, including three winners at the back, Clair Barker the best of them 8. Trench did very well to restrict Wem USC to a 40 shot win at Greenfields, with only George Williams winning single figures for the Premier League side, 21-8. The Mid-Shropshire team had 4 winners themselves, former Premier League player Pete Roden the best of them 13. Chester Road showed no mercy in beating Madeley Cricket Club by 85 overall. Martin Lloyd was the best of four single figure winners, 21-3, while John Roberts Snr was best of three winners for the Mid Shropshire side, 13, on Crescent. Newport beat Castlefields again, just like last season, to progress to the Quarter Finals. They fought back from being 21 down on District after four after Mike Beer had won 10 and Keith Wall 11. But Pete Farmer, having won 23 consecutive games on a Friday night, led the comeback by beating Callum Wraight 17 and was backed up by Mark Selley and Pete Cookson both winning 8, as they won by 26 overall. Last year's runners up Ifton kept up their good cup from by taking advantage of an under strength Wrockwardine Wood on Old Shrewsbury. Skipper Dickie Jones commented on a "good solid team performance. We were 5 down after the first four, but Richie Griffiths won 9 in the middle which put us in front. Andy Hughes won 7 which more or less sealed the win." The Wrockites' best winner was Steve Roberts 10. Bowring put their poor start in the league behind them as they beat Hanwood on Chester Road, delighting captain Rich Lawson. "Really pleased with the win as we knew we'd be in for a very hard match against a quality Hanwood side. We managed to get a lead off the first four, held it in the middle, with some great scrambling by Aaron King in the back four to get 10 against a rampant Mark Shore making a big difference. Roy Bradburn and Martin Gaut both did their job but performance of the night was Brian Jarvis who was superb in beating Nick Davies. An excellent team performance." Rich himself was best winner 7, with Ash Wellings also winning 10 to share best win with Mark Shore for Hanwood. Sir John Bayley comfortably beat Burway by 54 at Meole Brace. A slow start saw them then have two single figure winners in the middle, led by Ant Bracken's 5 win, to then stretch away with all four winners in the back. Len Lewis was best for the Ludlow side, 12.
