KGJ Insurance Shropshire Cup 1st Round Preview

  • Mid Shropshire high flyers clash, Tele aim to go one better, Church look for shock
There are 16 ties in the KGJ Insurance Shropshire Cup as 32 teams look to get into round 2. Highley are 3rd and Sir John Bayley are 5th in the Mid Shropshire League and clash on Shifnal in what promises to be a close game. Bayley captain Craig Baugh commented that "we've had a decent start to the season in the Mid Shropshire Division 1, all the boys and Kelly come into this game in some decent form with 2 of them qualifying for the league merit finals. Highley are a well respected side with some good players in their ranks. I'm expecting a decent atmosphere, vocal but friendly, on a Shifnal green that is probably a good leveller considering both teams come off tricky greens." There is another Mid Shropshire Division One clash between Sinclair and Bridgnorth on St Georges Bottom Green. Division 2 side Charlton aim to shock higher league opposition Wrockwardine Wood on Sir John Bayley bottom green, while Edgmond also aim to do the same against the Bowring on Sinclair. Mid Shropshire leaders St Georges meet Tanners Shropshire Division 1 side Bishops Castle on Prees Old Green. Captain Paul Beer admits "we are going into this cup game on a good run of form at the moment. I don't know too much about Bishops Castle but we will give them the respect they deserve. It is a tricky neutral green at Prees so will be a good match." Allscott also take on Tanners opposition in Old Shrewsbury on Wem USC, while current holders Hadley USC take on Tanners Division 1 bottom side Meole Brace on Bridgewater Big Green. There are three more Tanners and Mid Shropshire clashes as Bylet play Battlefield on Hodnet, 2016 winners Prince of Wales Hotel look to reclaim their title as they take on Madeley CC on Hanmer, and Shifnal face last year's runners up Telepost at Chester Road Ladies green. Telepost skipper Rob Jones is showing dedication as he comes back from Lanzarote this morning to play, and commented "I know very little about Shifnal but I am sure they will make it difficult for us. Hopefully we can continue our good run in this cup." The team who beat them in the final, Castlefields, play Tanners Division 2 side Burway at Bowring premier green. Church are looking to upset fellow Tanners side Pontesbury on Archibald Worthington as they aim to bridge the one division gap. Captain Neil Williams knows "we are up against it as first and foremost Pontesbury are a force on their day and secondly we will have a few missing on the night. But I'm confident if we can bowls to our max we can make a game of it. We've got a couple who have experience of the green but majority of us go there as first timers." Hadnall are another Division 2 side looking to beat Division One opposition in the Crescent on Allscott. Market Drayton and Whitchurch Division One sides District, Archibald Worthington and Prees take on Trench, Greenfields and Atcham Malthouse at Battlefield, Charlton and Hadley USC respectively.
