The 2017 KGJ Insurance County Cup Final takes place today between Ifton and St Georges. There is a huge contrast between the two teams’ history in this competition. This is Ifton’s second ever final, after losing to Castlefields in 2002, while St Georges have won this competition 11 times, the last in 2010. Both will fancy their chances of winning the trophy, Ifton have had a remarkable run to the final beating the likes of Sir John Bayley, Chester Road and Newport while St Georges have had to see off Meole Brace and the holders Bowring amongst others. St Georges currently sit 5th while Ifton after being bottom of the table at the halfway stage now sit in 12th position of the Salop Leisure Shropshire Premier Bowling League. But league form means nothing in a cup game, and it will be a case of who can handle a Battlefield green known for being pushy best to be able to get their hands on the trophy. Both teams feature County players, Nick Jones against county team mate Lewis Scott is the pick of the first four, while Leighton Roberts and Clay Flattley is the pick of the draw and could have a huge bearing of where the momentum goes after the first four.
Ifton captain Dickie Jones says “we are looking forward to the final as it’s the biggest club game to play in. We have had some great results to get here, the draw has come out evenly matched so I expect it will be close.”
So get yourself down Battlefield tomorrow night for the 6.30 start to watch two teams battle it out for the 2017 Glynn Hill Trophy.
