Ifton meet Newport in the first KGJ Insurance County Cup Semi Final at Meole Brace tonight with both teams having deposited one of the top two of the Salop Leisure Shropshire Bowling League in this competition. Ifton beat Champions Sir John Bayley while Newport beat leaders Castlefields both comfortably in the 2nd round. But while Newport are flying high in the league, Ifton are bottom but have picked up their form recently. Ifton have appeared in one final in 2002 and would love to get to another and finally get their name on the trophy. Captain Dickie Jones knows “it’s our biggest cup game for a long while, we have had some good results so far and it would be nice to reach the final. I think both teams know the green well so I’m expecting it to be a good game against a Newport side who up to now have been in good form. Newport will probably start favourites but it’s a cup semi final so anything can happen!” Ifton do have a good record on that Meole green having won there in the Premier League on a few occasions, including in 2015. Newport though are flying high in 3rd place after a transitional season last year. But captain Mick Jones is not taking anything for granted. “We are hoping to win what i expect to be a close semi final against an Ifton side who are better than their league position shows.” This is Newport’s first semi since they won it in 2014 and they will love to get to another final and get the club back on the winning trail once again.
So it promises to be a cracker of a cup tie in Shrewsbury! The action starts at 6.30 p.m.
A reminder to both clubs that all players need to have played 6 games in one or a number of SCGBA affiliated leagues and that dress code applies.
