Shropshire surge into Semis

Shropshire have surged into the Endsleigh Senior County Championship Semi Final after a comfortable 79 chalk success over Derbyshire to finish top of the group unbeaten. It was a slow start though with only a 13 chalk lead at home despite Glyn Herbert winning 9 and Callum Wraight 19, along with man of the match Martin Lloyd who ran out from 18-16 down. But two winners in the front away helped us only trail by 5 chalks there. Rich Lawson played well for his 13 against Derbyshire man of the match Dan Petcher, battling back from 16-6 down, while Scott Harries played very well to lead 9-3 over the middle before his opponent Conor Chamberlain went long and just edged Scott out 17, with Scott scrambling four more chalks from 19-13 down. Clay Flattley had an up and down game with the jack recovering from 12-7 down to lead 13-12 and then again from 18-15 down to win 19 on the longer marks. Glyn Picknell played excellent to lead 15-4 before his opponent rallied to get 16 as Glyn saw the game out in a great performance.

Into the middle and Shropshire took a stranglehold of the game with three winners away led by Pete Grimston’s 9 win on round pegs over the crown, earning him Shropshire man of the match. Wayne Phillips played very well on round pegs to lead 15-9 and maintained this to win 15, while Alex Jones had a high quality game which was tight before Alex had a break of 6 on a round peg on the edge of the green to lead 16-11. But his opponent went long and got back to 19-17 up before two 2s got Alex over the line. Rob Roden had to fight hard trailing 6-1 and 13-8 before a few 2s helped him get to 18. Over at Wem and it was still a struggle with 2 20 losers along with Adie Rowe winning 20 and Kiah Roberts winning 15. This meant a lead of 18 at home and away and 24 overall.

At the back and 4 winners at home meant the job was done with a 50 shot win there. Rich Goddard and Colin Beaman both won 12, Wayne Rogers 11, to earn Shropshire man of the match, and Mike Beer 17. We had three winners away to, with Rob Burroughs fighting back from 7-1 down to win 13 over the middle. Jamie King led 8-2 on round pegs before his opponent went longer and ran out from 15 across, while Paul Reeves was always in control winning 7 to earn the overall man of the match award. Tom Roden had a very close game from John Dewey which he trailed 19-15 before going long to lead 20-19 and then get out 20 with a very good bowl.

So well done to the players on their success and now all eyes are on the Semi Finals against North Midlands on Sunday 6th August.
