Meole & St Georges clash, Telford Derby, Chester Road & Ifton look for boost
Meole Brace and St Georges are the headline clash as the two big hitters in the Salop Leisure Shropshire Premier Bowling League clash in the Quarter Finals of the KGJ Insurance County Cup. Both teams will fancy their chances of winning the competition and will meet on Bridgewater big green. St Georges captain Tony Rhodes comments “it’s a game dependent on all 12 contributions and we’ll then see who comes out on top. I believe we’re very evenly matched.” These two teams met in Whitchurch in 2015 with Meole Brace coming out on top on Chester Road Ladies green but St Georges have strengthened since then. Newport are another favourite after dumping out Castlefields and they take on a full strength Bylet side on St Georges bottom green. Bylet will be full of confidence themselves after beating Hanwood in the last round but will need to be at their very best to beat a Newport side flying in the league.
There is a Telford derby at Allscott as holders Bowring take on Wrockwardine Wood. Both teams have enjoyed up and down seasons so far and there will be plenty of ex-players on either side. Bowring captain Jamie King says it is a “massive game for us and we know we need to be on our game to get past them. They are a good side and I think it’s going to be a really close game.” Bowring got back to winning ways on Friday while Wrockwardine won away at Ifton so both teams will hope to build on those wins. Chester Road and Ifton are two teams struggling for form in the league, both having suffered three home defeats already this season, so are hoping the Cup will provide some cheer. Ifton thrashed Premier League champions Sir John Bayley last round and will want to continue that form this round. Captain Dickie Jones knows “it’s a fifty fifty game with both sides struggling in the league. It’s a green where none of our players have played before. But on a neutral green I have confidence in my players especially after the last round.” Chester Road skipper Paul Fowles also knows “both teams will feel they have a chance of making it to the Semi Finals. I don’t think either team know the green so it will be a case of who finds it on the night.”
A reminder that all players who take part in the Quarter Finals must have played 4 league games in one or a combination of SCGBA affliated leagues.
