Premier League retain Senior Inter League Crown

The Salop Leisure Shropshire Premier Bowling League retained their Senior Inter League Crown with a 34 shot victory over Ludlow in a repeat of last year's final on St Georges Top Green. The only scare they suffered was in the Semi Finals when it was left to captain Jamie King to steer them home. The group stages saw some tight games, especially in Group B where there was a draw and an one shot victory! Group A The Premier League Blue side dominated this group with three victories, by 26 over Tanners Shropshire, 38 over Shropshire Ladies and then 14 over the Mid Shropshire Friday team. There was a close game between the Shropshire Ladies and Mid Shropshire with Mid Shropshire getting over the line by just 2 chalks, but the Tanners Shropshire team beat both of them by 27 and 20 overall, but this was not good enough to be the best runner-up. Group B Ludlow drew with Market Drayton in their first game, with Ian Farrimond the best winner 7 for Market Drayton and Wayne Rogers 10 for the Ludlow League. This was followed up by an one shot win for the Ludlow League over the Whitchurch League, Jolyon Partridge winning 16 last on to seal the win. This meant the winner of Market Drayton and Whitchurch would have a chance of going through as best runner-up to Ludlow as they beat North Shropshire Ladies, like the other two had before hand. Ludlow did that by 40 with three single figure winners, which left Whitchurch and Market Drayton fighting it out. Whitchurch were 9 up off three, and then 10 up off five before three winners at the back, led by Ian MacDonald's 9 win meant they won by 31, which was good enough to be the best runner-up. Group C The crunch game was the first one between the Wem League and Premier League Yellow team, with the Wem enjoying a fine start to lead by 26, led by Sam Millward's 11 win, and saw the match out to win by 15 despite Ash Wellings replying with an 11 win himself. The Mid Shropshire Thursday Team had a great win with 8 winners over the Market Drayton Senior Citizens League, winning by 57 with Michael Cooper the best 9. But they came unstuck against the Premier League and the Wem side, losing by 35 and 32, Colin Beaman and Tony Rhodes best for the Premier 11 and Nick Davies 9 for the Wem, while Justin Pegram was only winner 16 against the Premier League and then Ian Thomas was best 19 against the Wem. The Market Drayton Senior Citizens League improved from their first game, earning a win against the Wem League, Isobel Jones 19, and then two against the Premier League, Carol Matthews 14 and Eve Hollins 18. This meant the Premier League were unable to get the big win they needed to be best runner-up, only winning  by 34 despite Craig Wilson winning 7. Semi Finals The Semi Finals Draw saw the holders Premier League play the Whitchurch League and the Wem League playing the Ludlow League. Premier League Blue v Whitchurch League Rob Fuller was first off for the Premier League beating Martin Lloyd 14, making full use of a 13-4 start, but they were 3 down off the first three cards with Clay Flattley winning 14 and Mike Dulson 18. Dave Lloyd's 21-9 win at number four in 13 ends meant the Premier League led by 9 and Mark Taylor's 17 win but them 13 up. But Paul Reeves trailed 11-4 and 17-10, before coming back to get 15 off Derek Wright, while George Williams led 19-15 after trailing 11-6, but didn't score again against Ian MacDonald. This meant the Premier led by 5 with Jamie King going on, having to score 17 to win the game. He led 9-6 in the corners before Adrian Smout of Whitchurch fought back and led but at 15 across Jamie was just one end away from winning the game. However Adrian played two good ends in the corners and had two bowls two foot away next end. Jamie played up and managed to rest the nearest bowl to score one, then played a great lead down an edge next end and followed it up with a bowl a foot behind. Adrian fired but missed meaning they had gone through despite Adrian then running out. Wem v Ludlow The Wem League enjoyed a good start with Rich Lawson winning 13 and Mick Jones 15, but Adam Dovey's 10 win for Ludlow put them back in it. Wayne Rogers then won 14 to put them 4 up but Mark Selley's 12 win and Sam Millward winning 20 meant that the Wem League led by 6. However Russ Davies beat Carl Preece 8 on a round peg to seal the game with Jolyon Partridge then winning 18 to give the Ludlow League a win of 10. Final (Premier League Blue v Ludlow) The Ludlow League played their two county players in the first four and they both won, but Rob Fuller came back from 17-12 down to get 19 off Wayne Rogers and Scott Harries from 15-9 down to get 15 off Kiah Roberts. The other two cards produced winners for the Premier League, Dave Lloyd recovering from 15-12 down to win 16 and player of the match Rob Roden winning 12 from 11-8 down on straight marks. So into the back four the Premier League led by 7. Into the back four and Mark Taylor played well over the middle and up to the crown and back to win 13, with Jamie King playing well corners to triumph 14 and seal the match for the Premier. George Williams came back from 11-6 down to win 16 and Paul Reeves won 15 to cap off a second straight triumph for the Premier League. Full results are here. It was a great day overall with only the Semis and Final affected by a bit of rain. The county would like to thank the Premier League for hosting and running the Inter League, as well as the clubs involved and to Mike Potter for refereeing. Also thanks to Mike Beckett for setting up the online system enabling people to keep up to date with the scores.
