KGJ Insurance County Cup 1st Round Review

No shocks for Premier League teams, Meole and Hanwood edge out Premier opponents

There were no shocks in the 1st round of the KGJ Insurance County Cup as all the Salop Leisure Shropshire Premier Bowling League teams stamped their authority on their opponents. The closest encounter was at Chester Road where the Abbey ran Wrockwardine Wood close in the first four before losing by 39 overall with 3 winners, Simon Damm the best 15. For Wrockwardine there was only one single figure winner, Ian Thomas winning 9. Sinclair only lost by 46 against St Georges with just 2 winners as only 2 losers ended up being single figures, Mike Wainwright winning 6 and Lewis Scott 9. Brenda Slingo took a fine scalp 16 while Ian Evans was the other winner 15. Madeley Cricket Club also had two winners against Chester Road, Tony Roche 13 and Nigel Booth 20 but went down by 89 with Andy Moss the best winning 4 on Battlefield. Hadley USC had two winners as well with John Newey winning 16 and Ash Gregory 19 from 19-15 down, but were defeated by 70 against Sir John Bayley on Allscott, Scott Simpson leading the way winning 5. Trench and Hadnall both managed one winner against their higher opposition. Trench’s Pete Millington won 20 as they lost by 97 on Monkmoor to Ifton with new signing Joey Williams winning 6 to be best for the Miners, while for Hadnall Jon Lyttle gave them something to cheer about as he won 17 in a 67 shot defeat on Atcham against the Bylet, who had the two Harries’ as best winners 9, Scott and Mick. Scott also wanted to “thank Atcham for the food they put on for both sides last night. The burgers and hot dogs went down a treat, fair play to them doing that for us!” Charlton didn’t manage to have a winner against record holders Castlefields as they lost by 149, Ann Withington scoring the highest 14 with the fields having 7 single figure wins, Tony Wall the best 4.

The two all Premier League ties were both won by 17 in two close games. At Bowring Meole Brace overcame missing a few players in beating Burway, and after trailing by 6 after the first four to, with Kiah Roberts and Peter Griffiths joint best winners 12. But Colin Beaman won 6 to be part of three winners in the middle to move Meole 14 ahead, and despite another 12 win by Kevin Dovey at the back for the Ludlow side, two wins by Mark Thomas and Doug Edwards won the Shrewsbury side the game. Another Shrewsbury team Hanwood beat Wem USC by the same score over at Hadley USC, which delighted captain Mark Shore.  “Last night we had a real tight game with Wem at Hadley. Pick of the front four for wWm was a great performance from Craig Ashley beating David Burton 11. He was their only win but meant Wem led by 2 after the first four. For Hanwood, Wayne Phillips recovered from a very poor start against John Bushill coming back from 12-4 to win 21-20. In the middle and Derek Wright displayed his undoubted class to beat Gary Neal 21-8 on a difficult 3/4 corner mark (to be best winner for them) and Neil Boxall also played well to beat nick Davies 16 which meant after 6 Wem led by 21. But strong performances from Glyn Wellings and Ben Talbot reduced to the gap to 10. In the back Danny Wornell scored 11 2s to beat his mate George Williams (6 to be best winner) to put Hanwood back in the game and with a classy display from Dave Payne winning 21-11 the tie was sealed for Hanwood.”

The other two ties featured non Premier-League sides, and Prince Hotel beat Monkmoor by 115 on Oxon with Daniel Brookfield the only winner for Monkmoor, 12, while Clair Barker was best for the Prince, 3. The other tie was much closer, Old Shrewsbury beating District by 16 on Sir John Bayley. District had 4 winners in the front to lead by 19, with Dan Beeston winning 12 to be joint best winner, but the Tanners Shropshire side turned the tie on its head with 3 winners in the middle to lead by 8, with John Harris joint best winner 8. There were two winners apiece but Old Shrewsbury sealed the tie with another 8 winner, Derek Jones, and another 12 winner for District, Ben Hinton.

There are 12 Premier League teams in the draw on Saturday from 11, with the other four made up by Tanners Shropshire sides Elephant and Castle, Battlefield, Prince Hotel and Old Shrewsbury.
