Shropshire v Warwick and Worcester Preview

The quest for the 2017 Crosfield Cup starts in earnest today and it couldn’t have started with a much tougher tie. Multiple winners Warwick and Worcester are the opponents and they are using their banker green in the George to take us on, while we sprung a surprise in picking the Bowring, a green that has only been used once before. However when we did last season it resulted in a great 47 shot win over Greater Manchester so the selectors will hope for the same result to give the away team plenty of margin to seal a win. We are helped by the fact that Greg Smith, multiple competition winner, is on holiday and that Steve Freer, Peter Davenport and Tom Palmer haven’t been selected to play. But the team still features Meole Brace Open Winner Ryan Prosser along with other young guns Elliott McGuinness, Lee Kington, Ben Harris and Gareth Herbert, as well as several experienced players like Ant Bracken, Steve Wallace, Steve Darling, Paul Gamsby amongst some quality others. We have kept a similar team to the one who came so close to winning it last season, with just two changes from that team. Paul Williams and Derek Wright have come out of the squad altogether, with Glyn Herbert back available and new Castlefields signing Adie Rowe back in the team. County Selector Mick Jones comments “Glyn’s available again after being unavailable for the final and Adie’s been out of the side for a while and hopefully he’ll do us a good job.” Both players feature away, along with seven other former County Merit winners. At Bowring are many of that team that played it so well last season, and hopefully that will give them confidence to get a good win. “As long as they’ve been practising hard then we’ll have the benefits of a good home green” says Mick, who along with Mark Thomas, are picking the team for the next three years. “You have to say that these are the two strongest teams in the group going on records – and that’s no disrespect to Wales or Derbyshire – so this first game is must-win, and hopefully we can do the job!”

There will be lives score here.
