2016 has been a great year for Shropshire Bowls, with new and former winners of our trophies. Bowring won their first ever County Cup, shocking Castlefields in the final at Prees, while Prince Hotel won a thriller against Pontesbury at Bicton by just 2 chalks in the newly revamped Shropshire Cup. The Ludlow League won their first ever Junior Inter League up in Malpas beating holders and hosts the Whitchurch League. The Premier League were also first time winners of the Senior Inter League, beating the Ludlow League in the final on Wem USC, but the Mid-Shropshire League continued their dominance of the Veterans version, defeating the Wem League at Maddocks.
Wayne Rogers finally got his hands on the biggest trophy in the County, beating multiple winner Pete Farmer in the final on a great day at Wem Bowling Club. Tony Roche, captain of the victorious Mid-Shropshire Veterans Inter League team, won an individual title in the Veterans Merit at Broseley in the searing hat, beating Cedric Bancroft. Aaron King retained his Junior Merit crown at Meole Brace, overcoming Curtis Metcalfe in a close final, while Matt Beck of Old Shrewsbury won the Peter Ashton Youth Trophy on the other green, defeating Jake Bailey in the final. Rich Lawson retained his County Handicap title, beating previous winner Mike Beer in a tense final on Old Shrewsbury, while Sam Millward and Dave Rhodes prevented Jamie King and Scott Harries keeping their County Doubles title at Bridgwater. Jackie & Stuart Rutter regained their Dave Card Rose Bowl Memorial title at Broseley, beating Helen & Phil Clee in the final. Tony & Matthew Rhodes finally got their hands on the Father and Son trophy at Prees, defeating Phil & Ben Talbot in the final. At the Junior Trials the winner of the senior players was Liam Dovey of Burway, beating his older cousin Adam 19 in the final. In the junior final Lorna Parsons from Greenfields beat Prees’ Josh Warner 20 in another close final.
County-wise, the Seniors came oh so close to winning the Crosfield Cup for a third time, losing to Yorkshire by a mere 4 chalks in the final. The Juniors also lost to Yorkshire in the Semi Finals of the Juniors, while we didn't make it out of the group stage in the Veterans Competition, which is also where the Midland Alliance team lost in.
In the BCGBA competitions Meole Brace reached the Semi Finals of the World Club Championship to Kings Heath Park. Andy Moss had another glorious run to the final of the BCGBA Individual Senior Merit at Llay Miners Welfare Club, putting up a spirited fightback against Matt Gilmore but just dipping out. Callum Wraight won the Midland Masters, coming back from behind to beat Adam Kirby at Pennfields, and also won the Fleetwood Festival.
So it's been a great year for Shropshire Bowls and here's hoping for another great one in 2017, we wish all our players, sponsors and supporters all the best in 2017.
