2015 County Doubles

With the County Doubles tomorrow, we look back at last year's competition. Shropshire County Doubles Competition played on the greens of Donnington Wood Bowling Club on Sun 30th August 2015 Newport pairing Scott Harries & Jamie King became the latest to add their names to the list as County Doubles Champions after narrowly defeating seasoned St Georges team mates, Dave King & Ian Gaut, 21-15 in the final of the competition organised by competition secretary, Phil Scott and staged amid damp conditions at Donnington Wood BC. Highlights of the action included
Quarter finals: Scott Harries & Jamie King shared an evenly matched game with Alan Jones & John Roberts Jnr to take the scores to 13-13 before Harries & King took control and completed a near runout to win 21-15. After a level 8-8 start with defending champions Dave & Mike Beer, Ian Gaut & Dave King fought back from 8-13 to lead 19-13 and despite a rally to get back to within 2, Gaut & King finished 21-17. Allan Gaut and Phil Clee raced into a 14-5 lead before Steve & Liam Edwards mounted a an attack to pull back to trail 18-19 only for their opponents to end hopes, winning 21-18. Another evenly matched game saw Rich Lawson & Rob Roden move from 7-7 to 14-8 and 18-11 before Stuart Church & Aaron King hit back to lead 19-18 only for Lawson & Roden to take the game 21-19. Semi Finals: From 6-6, Scott Harries & Jamie King took control of their game with Allan Gaut & Phil Clee to lead 17-8 and soon finished to book their final place winning 21-10. After giving up a 9-0 start for their game to be level at 10-10, Ian Gaut & Dave King dominated play against Rich Lawson & Rob Roden to run out from 16-12 to win 21-12 The final: Understandably, the final between Scott Harries & Jamie King and Ian Gaut & Dave King was to be a close fought game as early exchanges saw Harries & King edge a 9-8 lead to tie 13-13 then from 16-15 up they shaded the next few ends to eventually end previous winners hopes, although with differing partners, Ian Gaut(1999) & Dave King(2004), to win 21-15. Phil Scott gave the 32 strong field an unexpected yet welcome extra game as he organised a consolation competition for first round losers which was eventually just won by brothers, Glyn & Darren Wellings as they survived a late fight back after leading Darryl Edwards & Steve Duckett 20-12 to win 21-20 After thanking Donnington Wood for their hospitality and Competition Sec. Phil Scott for his efforts, County President, Mike Potter presented the prizes and the Champions trophy to the delighted, Scott Harries & Jamie King.
