Shropshire Cup 1st & 2nd Round Preview

Brick faces Fields again, can Highley spring another shock, Finalists face Tanners tests

There is one tie left to be completed in the 1st round of the Shropshire Cup, and it's a repeat of a quarter final tie from last week where Castlefields took on Bricklayers, but this time it is Castlefields' second team in Tanners Division One who play the Brick. Brick spokesman Dan Williams says "our lads are really looking forward to the tie tomorrow. Castlefields are higher than us in the league and have a strong side but we have a couple of lads to add from the Wem league into our side side it should be a 50/50 game. Who ever deals with the green better should win! We gave a real good account of ourselves last Wednesday against Castlefields premier side and if we play as well as we did last week we should have a good chance of progressing." The tie is on Bayston Hill, a green where 6 of the Castlefields lads lost heavily a few weeks ago in the Tanner Cup, so they will be hoping to turn that around and match their first team exploits in having a good run in the cup. Highley will be looking for their third shock of the competition as they entertain St Georges' Division One side, after already shocking Sinclair and Battlefield in previous rounds. But both teams are missing a few players according to both captains, including star man Dave East possibly for Highley, while St Georges captain Steve Pessall says "we have 5 players out, 3 because they have played Premier League bowls and 2 away, so it will be a struggle but we will have to try and get some kind of a win against them." Holders Adderley take on Tanners Division One side Telepost at Ifton in what promises to be a close clash. Adderley have beaten two Division One sides on the way in Wrockwardine Wood and Horsehay while Telepost defeated fellow Division One side Old Shrewsbury last round. Telepost spokesman Rob Jones is honest by saying "we don't know a lot about Adderley except that some of their players play in the Tanners League for the Elephant and Castle team who are going well. We don't know anything about the green either so we will just play our normal game and let them worry about us." Runners up to Adderley last year, Donnington Wood, play another Division One side in Prince Hotel, who are doing well in the Tanners this season. Donnington do struggle to get a team out on a Wednesday due to work commitments, so this could play in Prince's hands. Prince captain Graeme Wornell is looking forward to the tie as "it will be nice to renew some old acquaintances as we always get on well with the Wendy House lads. The match may depend on how many of the big guns draw each other but we will enjoy the night whatever the result." Two more Division One teams clash at Allscott as Tanners side Pontesbury play Market Drayton and Whitchurch side Bridgewater. Bridgewater earned the biggest win of the competition last round beating Atcham by 112 with 12 winners, but will find it much harder against a side who reached the Quarter Finals of the County Cup last week. Burway will be looking to cause another shock, after beating higher opposition Allscott last round, when they play Madeley CC on OSBC. But Burway have "a lot of players out due to work and holidays so going to be a tough game for us" according to spokesman Simon Parsonage. Madeley CC, semi finalists in the County Cup a few years ago, comfortably beat same division rivals Hadnall last round but will find Burway a tougher nut to crack. There are two lower division clashes, with Division Two Tanners teams Albert Road, shock winners over Prees last round, playing Meole Brace Village on Crescent, with a Quarter Final place at stake for both teams. Edgmond are the lowest ranked team left in, and will fancy their chances of beating Charlton on Bylet Premier green. Edgmond beat Monkmoor last round while Charlton hammered Worthen and Brockton, and it will be a great chance for both to make the Quarters.   Shropshire Cup 1st round on 22nd June: Castlefields v Bricklayers on Bayston Hill Shropshire Cup 2nd round on 22nd June: Edgmond v Charlton on Bylet Prem Pontesbury v Bridgewater on Allscott St Georges v Highley on Edgmond Adderley v Telepost on Ifton Donn Wood v Prince Hotel on Prees Old Albert Road v Meole Brace Village on Crescent Burway v Madeley CC on OSBC no.2
