Shropshire Senior Merit: Less than a Week to go!

It is less than a week to the Shropshire Senior Merit Finals at Wem BC on Sunday from 11 a.m. and there will be a series of Previews on the website. There is also a 16 page Programme that has been produced for the day by Stuart Clee, available at £2 on entry. Firstly we look back at the qualifiers for this year's merit and how they got there.    In Telford current holder Rob Roden qualified, beating fellow county players Dave Rhodes and Glyn Picknell to qualify, at Sinclair. County Reserve Jamie King qualified alongside youngster John Potter and Simon Rhodes. Over at St Georges former winner Alan Davidson came through, along with Flowfit Shropshire Premier League Averages Winner Rob Burroughs and fellow young guns Kieran Buckley and Stuart Clee. At Hadley USC Wrockwardine Wood players Paul Bradburne and Martin Gaut came through along with former runner up Rich Lawson and Ian Gaut from St Georges. At Sir John Bayley Andy Stevens sprung a surprise by qualifying after not playing for 4 years and Newport captain Mark Selley came through. In Shrewsbury and Ash and Darren Wellings came through the group of death. Darren beat two times winner Callum Wraight 11 first game then beat Darren Phillips 10 to qualify, while Clay Flattley beat 2013 winner Kiah Roberts 11 but then lost to Ash Wellings 7 in the qualifier. At Bayston Hill County and Castlefields team mates Mike Beer and Paul Williams qualified along with young gun Martin Middleton, and at Telepost Mark Shore edged out Anthony Gray 20, Andy Wiggington beat Colin Beaman and Rich Goddard to qualify and Russ Pugh came past Mark Thomas in the qualifier. Over at Bicton former Meole Open Winner Wayne Rogers edged out Sam Cartwright from 16-12 down with Andy Duckett beating team mate Luke Jones 17 to qualify and Doug Edwards also beat another team mate to qualify, Dave Redge. In North Shropshire, young guns Chris Stretch and Matt Beeston qualified for the first time at Bridgwater, beating Carl Preece and Curtis Metcalfe respectively as they youngster saw off former finalists Martin Lloyd and Paul Latham. Over in Tilstock and 4 time winner Pete Farmer qualified beating Gavin Tommy 9 in the qualifier, while Gary Beff beat Junior Merit Runner-up Jack Butler 7 to qualify. Over at Victoria and another multiple winner Andy Moss qualified along with team mate Ian MacDonald and youngster George Williams, who having been a previous member of final green Wem BC could be one to watch out on finals day.
