Please find below report, scores and pictures from Mike Potter, which we thank him for. County Father & Son Doubles – Sat 4th June 2016 Prees Sports & Social Club A good field of 26 pairings met on a warm early Summer’s morning at the two bowling greens of Prees Sports club to contest the 2016 competition to find the county’s top Father & their youthful prodigy of a son that would test the quality bowling and stamina required to their limits as the temperatures hit the mid 20s. Utilising both greens, county President/competition sec. Phil Scott set the players off on 8hrs of action that eventually produced new champions names for the engravers to etch on the trophy after St Georges, Tony & Matthew Rhodes got the better of Hanwood’s Phil & Ben Talbot, 21-16 in the final. The final stages were played out on the bigger(newer) No.2 green - Highlights from Quarter finals Tony & Matthew Rhodes had to fight hard from 1-8 down to level at 8-8 against Len & Mick Lewis and edge into a slim 13-12 lead which they maintained as down the card the scores went onto 17-15 and 20-19 until the Rhodes’ got home 21-19. Tony & Mark Parsons converted a 0-6 deficit into a 14-6 lead before Phil & Stuart Clee hit back to force themselves into a 17-16, only for the Parson’s to respond to go to the edge 20-17 which was equalled by the Clee’s as the game was levelled 20-20. And with typical uncertainty of who would prevail, it was against a side touching bowl that the last bowl of the game edged past 3 covering bowls before nudging in to give the Parson’s a 21-20 card. Phil & Ben Talbot forged a strong 11-1 lead over Andy & Liam Stevens and moved onto to lead 15-8 before the Stevens’ hit a full house and single to close to trail 12-15 only for the Talbots to hit a full house themselves to go 19-13 and soon ended the game 21-15. Graham & Simon Lane and Roger & Josh Cotton shared early exchanges until at 9-9 the Cottons hit a full house only for them to lose the jack for 6 ends as the Lane’s went onto 20-13 who held onto to finish 21-17. Highlights from the semi Finals Tony Matthew Rhodes, capitalised on a round mark from the green centre to a corner to take the scores from 5-5 on to 15-6 against Tony & Mark Parsons and went onto complete in 18ends a 21-10 win to book their ticket to the final. Meanwhile, From 2-7 down, Phil & Ben Talbot fought hard against Graham & Simon Lane to go into a 12-7 lead and despite the scores were levelled, the Talbots kicked again to move onto 17-12 and they were able to maintain the lead as they too finished the game in 18ends to win 21-15. The Final The final was predominately played on two marks with Tony & Matthew Rhodes, on their preferred round mark from the corner to the centre turning 3-3(4ends) into a 12-5(10ends) before Phil & Ben Tabot strike back using a straight mark from the same green centre area to the other adjacent corner on the same side of the green to level 15-15(17ends) and even went into a 16-15 lead at the next end. Then seemingly trying to take the game to their opponents, abandoned their mark and set the jack on the Rhodes’s that backfired to the extent of conceding 3 chalks. Then a change of mark by the Rhodes’ straight along the edge proved decisive as they again made a triple shot counting end to complete a two ended runout and win the 2016 title 21-16(20ends) County President, Phil Scott congratulated host club Prees BC for the provision of an excellent green, facilities and refreshments before the presentation of the prizes to the finalists and the deserved 2016 Champions, Tony & Matthew Rhodes Qtr Finals Tony & Matthew Rhodes 21 – 19 Len & Mick Lewis Tony & Mark Parsons 21 – 20 Phil & Stuart Clee Phil & Ben Talbot 21 – 15 Andy & Liam Stevens Graham & Simon Lane 21 – 17 Roger & Josh Cotton Semi Finals Tony & Matthew Rhodes 21 - 10 Tony & Mark Parsons Phil & Ben Talbot 21 - 15 Graham & Simon Lane Final Tony & Matthew Rhodes 21 – 16 Phil & Ben Talbot 13394114_1129513817071924_2522648552254418498_n
