With the County Handicap today we look back at last year's competition. Lucky 777 for Lawson County Handicap – Mon 25th May 2015 Final Stages Severnside No.2
Qtr Finals Rich Lawson(Bowring) 21 – 07 Dan Beer(Battlefield) Paul Williams(Castlefield) 21 – 20 Stuart Rutter(Wrock Wood) Doug Edwards(Meole Brace) 21 – 16 Chris Kelly(Castlefields) Chris Jones(Old Shrewsbury) 21 – 15 Gary Whitehall(Adderley) Semi Finals Rich Lawson 21 – 07 Paul Williams Doug Edwards 21 – 15 Gary Whitehall Final Rich Lawson 21 – 07 Doug Edwards Bowring Premier League Capt and County regular, Rich Lawson must have a new favourite number reigned supreme in the final stages on Severnside No. 2 winning all of his three games 21-07 on his way to the 2015, Sportsjam sponsored County Handicap Championship and after defeating Meole Brace’s Doug Edwards 21-7 in the final. County Competition Secretary and this year’s deputy President, Phil Scott reported a low entry as only 54 bowlers contested the early qualifying sessions on four greens of Old Shrewsbury & Severnside. The final 16 players moved onto the Severnside No.2 green as the cloudy conditions warmed as the sun began to shine before again turning cooler mild weather that sparked an exodus from the venue as the competition progressed down to just a dozen or so being left to enjoy the quality bowling of the 2 semi-finals & final. Highlights from Quarter finals After recovering from a 1-6 deficit to Dan Beer(Battlefield), Rich Lawson(Bowring) went on a run to push into an 8-6 lead and apart from conceding a solitary chalk, went on to run out 21-7. Chris Kelly(Castlefields) clawed back from 4-9 down to pull almost level (11-12) only for Doug Edwards(Meole Brace) to run away to lead 16-11, only for Chris to pull level 16-16 but to no avail as Doug then ran out to win 21-16 Paul Williams(Castlefields) saw leads of 8-1 and 14-6 wiped out as Stuart Rutter(Wrock Wood) fought back to level at 16-16. From their they shared the ends seeing the game go 17-17 and 19-19 and it took an accurate strike coupled with some luck for Paul to count 2 and win 21-20. Chris Jones(OSBC) saw his 11-1 lead over Gary Whitehall(Adderley) being nibbled away till at 16-14 ended the threat by almost running out to record a 21-15 win. Highlights from the semi Finals As in his Qtr final, Rich Lawson began utilising to great effect a 20 metre mark up and down the green as he went from 3-3 to lead Paul Williams 9-3 and at 11-6 went on a 5 end run taking the score 19-6 and within 3 ends had ended Paul’s chances winning 21-7. Meanwhile, Doug Edwards & Gary Whitehall were “touring” the green, trying to lose each other without too much success as the scores levelled at 6-6, 10-10 and 13-13 before Doug struck out and took the lead 18-13 and went on to finish, booking his final stop with 21-15. The Final The final began brightly for Doug Edwards as he opened up a 6-2 and 7-4 lead after 11ends, but the next 11ends belonged to Rich Lawson as once on his, yet again highly productive mark matched only by Doug bad luck that saw him on many occasion drift his bowl through the narrowest of gaps and not count. And from being 4-7 down Rich ran out 21-7(22ends) County President, Mike Potter thanked Competitions organiser, Phil Scott, referee Roger Griffin and host clubs, Severnside and Old Shrewsbury for providing excellent bowling greens and refreshments throughout the day before thanking sponsors Sportsjam for their valued support and inviting their representative, Roger Preece to join him to make the presentation of prizes to the worthy competitors culminating with Richard Lawson receiving the Champions trophy and Dan Beer the "best newcomer" award, the Clare Cup. 11244895_930060513683923_8282042654351727180_n (1)
