Well Done, everyone Photos and report from Mike Potter SCGBA President 2015Under 21 Midland Masters 2015 Sponsored by Osprey water management & Bowls4u At Wrockwardine Wood BC (new green) On Sunday 19th July, 2015 Following the reluctance by organisers to stage again and with the possible threat losing the competition, Jamie King successfully negotiated sponsor deals from Osprey, Bowl4u and Shropshire Crown Green Bowling Association to enable the competition to continue, this year staged at Wrockwardine Wood BC, Shropshire. Thirty-two of the Midland’s top junior players were invited to enter the 2015 Under 21 Midland Masters competition, staged this year on the 3 year old new green at the Telford venue of Wrockwardine Wood BC where the players were subjected to a stern test from the challenging green with a high crown along many dips and hollows. The club’s well organised hospitality was matched with warm sunshine throughout making the day the success the organisers deserved. Receiving a £50 Bowls4u voucher for making the competition highest break of 13 was James Parkes. Highlights from the Quarter finals Dave Lloyd(Shropshire), after an even start, took his 9-7 lead up to 17-7 and 20-12 and despite a late surge by Bradley Bayliss(Derbyshire) that proved too late as Dave eventually finished 21-17. In a similar scoring game, Josh Hale(W&W) converted an 8-1 lead to 16-7 over Rob Perry(Staffs) and soon ended the game 21-10. Kieron Buckley and Sam Millward(both Shropshire) shared an even start, however from 7-7, Kieron began to take control to lead 14-10 and moved on to 19-11 before ending Sam’s challenge winning 21-12. Ryan Webb(Potteries) raced to a 13-2 lead before Dan Williams(Shropshire) hit back to almost level as he trailed 13-15. But Ryan was able to maintain the edge as they shared the next ends that saw him finish 21-18. Highlights from the Semi finals Dave Lloyd, primarily using a mark where he put the jack into a hollow requiring dead weight moved from 4-3 against Kieron Buckley to 12-6 and 18-6 and despite a 5 shot break, Dave finished 21-11. Josh Hale turned a deficit of 5-7 and 8-11 into a 15-11 lead over Ryan Webb mainly using a deceptive heavy corner and despite Ryan hitting back to within 1, Josh ran out to book a final place 21-14. Highlights from the Final Dave Lloyd, started well using ¾ corners over the crown to go from 4-2 to 11-5 and changed to a more productive large swinging round pegging mark on the side of the crown as he went on to lead Josh Hale 18-8 and after demonstrating some excellent weighted bowling that forced Josh into striking to prolong the game, Dave finished the game, after 23 ends, winning 21-10.
